Read About Design

Read About Design is an ongoing collaboration between MA Design Writing Criticism, London College of Communication and the London Design Festival. Here, you will find a selection of writings on design from the portfolios of recent MA DWC graduates. Their work takes many forms, is both collaborative and individual, and always experimental and original.

"It is great to work with students whose enthusiasm is matched by a course which encourages them to continually explore new forms and ideas." - William Shaw, London Design Festival

1

Ethos

What is design writing criticism? Despite finishing the MA, it is a question we continually ask ourselves. We see it as a prompt that drives us to develop our own positions and voices. We rely on the verbal and the visual. We are thinkers as much as we are makers. Read About Design is a place to explore these ideas.

2

Process

The finished piece of writing is only one step in our journey as design writers. Along the way, we seek to develop our abilities and understand how they feed off of one another. We think of ourselves as craftspeople who strive to sharpen and explore a seemingly never-ending toolkit.

3

Writing

The work you will find here is a carefully curated collection of personal essays, stories, multimedia, coursework and published writing produced over the past year. Rather than conforming to a canon, we hope that this on-going collection critically explores what we see as limitless possibilities.

Collaborations

A collaborative spirit is intrinsic to the design process. This year we extended that point of view to shape how we understand design. Curatorial work, animations, interviews — even chats over cups of coffee — fed into how we critically engaged with subject areas.
